Anorexia

Physical

Severe and unexplained weight loss, even in a person already very thin.
Erratic menstrual periods or stopping of them altogether.
Sleeping problems.
Stomach pains.
Feeling cold all the time and having cold purple hands and feet.
Development of fine downy hair on the face and neck.



Behavioural

Excessive exercising, often compulsive or part of a rigid routine.
Tendency towards perfectionism.
Skipping meals or eating less at each meal.
Avoiding situations where food is likely to be consumed.
Lying about eating meals.



Emotional

Anxiety
Depression
Tearfulness
Anger
Extreme mood swings
Low self-esteem
Rejecting friends and relatives
Poor concentration
Introspection
Lack of interest in relationships or sex

Bulimia

Physical

Recurrent sore throats.
Frequent changes in weight, however weight may be normal.
Dermatitis around the mouth.
Swollen glands, or development of “Hamster Cheeks”.
Tooth decay.
Broken blood vessels in eyes.
Dry or poor skin condition.
Persistent stomach pain with constipation and dehydration.

Behavioural

Developing rituals around eating.
Eating large amounts of food.
Being sick after meals or taking laxatives.

Depression
Tearfulness
Anger
Extreme mood swings
Low self-esteem
Rejecting friends and relatives
Poor concentration
